Evidence-Based Integrative Cancer Therapies

One of the key initiatives of Faith & Gratitude is to bring evidence-based complementary and alternative therapies to patients. This year, we had the pleasure of attending CAM, the Complementary & Alternative Medicine conference, in West Palm Beach, FL. We had the opportunity to hear many engaging speakers and the privilege of meeting some in person.

There were five (5) presenters that made an impact on us and we wanted to share their exciting evidence-based cancer therapies. Below we have provided a brief bio on each one, a synopsis of their CAM presentation and a link to their website for your further research.

Dr. Charles Bens, PhD

Dr. Bens is an internationally recognized author, speaker and consultant specializing in the fields of organizational improvement and workplace wellness. His creative publications and presentations have garnered praise on many levels. He is the owner of Healthy at Work, a wellness company helping employees to become healthier following the principles of Functional Medicine.

Dr. Bens presented a fascinating discussion of “Preventing and Treating Cancer Naturally: Some New Developments” to those gathered at CAM. The presentation discussed some of the newer natural approaches that have been gaining recognition due to the increasing scientific evidence that has been emerging for them. One new natural treatment therapy he discussed was: Modified Citrus Pectin-Pectasol-C. Dr. Bens stated that Modified Citrus Pectin- Pectasol-C has become one of the most powerful cancer prevention and treatment nutrients ever found.

Dr. Greg Burzynski, MD

Dr. Burzynski graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology and later studied medicine at Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow, Poland. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the UT Southwestern Internal Medicine Residency Program at Seton Family of Hospitals in Austin and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. He later finished a fellowship in integrative medicine at The University of Arizona, Center for Integrative Medicine. He feels medicine should be predictive, personalized, preemptive, and participatory. He owns a private primary care practice while also being on staff at the Burzynski Clinic.

Dr. Burzynski spoke about “Advances in Personalized Cancer Care”. He believes that being aware of the underlying molecular mechanisms, pathways, and intricate tumor characteristics allows a doctor to tailor a therapy more precisely. His personalized approach to cancer treatment is complemented with proper nutrition, exercise, and mind/body balance for an improved patient outcome.

Dr. Mary Hardy, MD

Dr. Mary Hardy, board certified in internal medicine and a specialist in botanical and integrative medicine, has actively combined complementary and alternative therapies with traditional Western medicine for over twenty-five years in both her clinical practice and research projects. Previously the Medical Director of the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology, Dr. Hardy is a recognized leader in the field of Integrative Oncology. She has served as a board member of the Society for Integrative Oncology and as co-leader of the Oncology Interest Group in the Consortium of Academic Health Centers of Integrative Medicine.

“Supporting the Immune System During Cancer Treatment: What Does the Medical Literature Say?” was the topic of her presentation. She discussed the fact that many conventional cancer treatments damage the immune system instead of supporting it. Effective strategies were presented which can help maintain the immune system during treatment. Those include exercise, specific foods and a number of dietary supplements such as vitamin D3 and medicinal mushrooms. She encourages finding strong evidence of safety and efficacy in the medical literature that will allow one to make smart choices during treatment.   De Sousa A et al.
